I've been using the Xbox (beta) app to access Game Pass for PC games. There is an extremely annoying "feature" where the app repeatedly prompts me (ten times?) for my smart card credentials regardless of if my card reader is connected to the system or not. If this is only happening in Xbox app then try first resetting it at Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Xbox Live > Advanced Options > Reset. Restart PC, if it persists then go back to same place to Uninstall app. Restart PC, go into Microsoft Store settings > My Library to reinstall the app.

Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) is now available on smart TVs and streaming devices. Once the app is installed, start the app, sign in with your Microsoft account, connect a controller, and you can play cloud games without a console. When it tries to read the private key, it is redirected to the smart card to get it, whether one is inserted or not. Before mucking with user certificates, a quick check might be to set up another profile on the computer to see if the issue persists. The issue that I'm facing now, is that every time that I sign into my account (non admin account) and the desktop loads in, I get a windows security prompt asking for my smart card, four times. The card reader is no longer plugged in via USB, as I use it very infrequently.
